One of the most fundamental challenges for any broker is to find and place coverage after a client has been dropped by its incumbent carrier. Sometimes that happens for reasons unique to the insurer, but when the cause of non-renewal is the age of the asset, the challenge gets even steeper. Luckily Kimberly Golafshan is on the case.
“The industry has aging infrastructure,” said the risk officer for one client, “that is just the reality, and everyone knows it. Kimberly had to find a new carrier for us, and she really stepped up to the challenge.”
The carrier had decided not to renew coverage for the client, stating the assets had reached the end of their operational lifecycle. That determination was reached despite the client conducting a comprehensive remaining useful life study that found significant years of viable operation remaining.
Golafshan’s practice is to hold an extensive pre-renewal meeting with clients, so she was prepared when the incumbent carrier pulled out. She arranged for the risk engineering team of another major underwriter to conduct a detailed assessment of the assets, including an independent inspection. Given the limited time remaining on the expiring policy, the site visit and resulting detailed reports were all completed within 30 days.
With that data in hand, Golafshan went to London to find global markets. Golafshan was able to reduce the all-risk deductible from $2.5 million to $1 million. She also secured a 7.5% overall rate reduction.
