For Karen Sullivan, 2020 was characterized by mastering challenging renewals and pulling off insurance feats of strength.

One of her firm’s largest pulp and paper clients was informed of an upcoming nonrenewal by its carrier after a 20-year relationship. COVID-19 made finding new insurers more difficult as they could not visit the client to see the risk controls in place.

Sullivan joined the account just 60 days before the renewal was due. While searching for coverage, she also had to educate the client about the likelihood of increased premiums and decreased capacity based on the more favorable terms it had with the prior carrier.

Sullivan’s global team pushed hard on the international market to fill the gaps in the program, down to the last week before renewal. The client considered the result a success based on hardening market conditions: “Karen had to exert all of her talent, skills, and lean on her relationships to pull together our program.”

Another client faced similar challenges with its renewal. Having a diverse business with risks in both the pharmaceutical and life sciences arenas, the client has a history of difficult placements.

“This past renewal was horrendous with some long-term strategic partners that made life miserable, but Karen was calm, confident and led us through a very difficult time.”

Another client praised Sullivan’s service, saying, “Her level of sincerity and caring are truly what customer service is about.”
