At a time of rising prescription drug costs, analytical rigor has never been as valuable in helping stabilize this fastest-growing segment of employee health benefit costs.

When pharmaceutical spend rose sharply in 2025, Nick Holdbrooks quickly helped identify cost drivers and tweaked plan design to curb unnecessary brand-name utilization, explained Crystal O’Brien, VP of HR for Care Synergy.

“Under his guidance, we introduced a targeted brand-name prescription deductible and aligned our copays with market benchmarks to better manage high-cost medications,” she said.

The new structure delivered 7.4% overall savings compared to the prior arrangement, along with $35,000 in transition credit.

In her 20 years of HR leadership experience, Holdbrooks stands out as the most trusted and valued partner O’Brien has worked with. He also helped negotiate group health price increases for the Denver Zoological Conservation Alliance to about 12%, despite several large claims being filed over the past few years, whereas other nonprofits within the Denver metropolitan area saw their rates rise up to 25%, according to Jacque Taylor, the organization’s CHRO.

“We are running at or right below projections, and our employee satisfaction has stayed strong,” she happily said.

Taylor said another noteworthy initiative that Holdbrooks’s expertise helped shape was a tiered approach to benefits and compensation wherein a higher percentage of benefits are covered for those who earn less than $50,000 a year.
