We recently caught up with Tori Roberts, a client executive at Gallagher and 2024 Education Power Broker.
Risk & Insurance: What are some of the keys to your success as a commercial insurance broker?
Tori Roberts: I have always placed a great deal of importance on mentorship. Learning from industry experts and experienced risk managers within the education sector has proven to be invaluable over the course of my career.
Technical expertise has also been a crucial component of my success. I have dedicated myself to becoming an expert in the education niche by continuously engaging in training, attending conferences and conducting thorough research on the different policy forms and coverage.
I work hard to put clients first. This involves going beyond the mere placement of insurance policies and instead providing comprehensive risk management advice. By staying up-to-date on market trends and actively engaging with clients’ leadership teams and boards, I am able to gain a deep understanding of how their operational objectives can align with their insurance needs.
Despite the convenience of technology for meetings, I have found that in-person visits are still crucial, as they provide insights that cannot always be gleaned from statements of values or applications. These visits allow for discussions on new educational programs or ways to improve campus safety.
Lastly, staying up-to-date on emerging products and solutions is vital. By remaining informed about the latest developments, such as active assailant coverage, I can offer my clients solutions that effectively address their evolving risks.
R&I: In the economic sectors you work in, what are some of the biggest challenges insureds face?
TR: There are several significant challenges insureds face, particularly in the education sector. One challenge we’ve seen recently is civil unrest, which can have detrimental effects on students’ mental health. It can also lead to coverage restrictions, including exclusions on property policies related to these damages.
Additionally, insureds are grappling with funding issues, as higher education institutions are closing or merging, which also has insurance implications. Another challenge is the decline in enrollment, raising the question of how to keep a college education affordable and appealing to prospective students.
Lastly, insureds are learning how to adapt to AI and data security threats, as the misuse of AI can result in unauthorized access or use of proprietary institutional data. It is important that we are providing our insureds in the education sector with the resources and guidance on how to implement measures to protect sensitive information while staying ahead of these emerging AI-related cyber risks.
R&I: If you could name one thing the commercial insurance industry could improve on, what would it be?
TR: One key area for improvement in the commercial insurance industry is leveraging AI and advanced technology to automate processes that do not require strategic thinking while also providing insureds with simplified ways to be hands-on with their insurance program. It is important to prioritize the human element in our business. Insureds are seeking excellent customer service from real individuals who can provide critical thinking using real-time data and knowledge that AI cannot replicate. Striking a balance would ensure that we harness the benefits of technology while maintaining the personal touch that sets us apart in this industry.
R&I: Where do you find the most joy in your work?
TR: The aspect of my work that brings me the most joy is the opportunity to find innovative solutions for clients facing complex challenges. It is incredibly rewarding when clients express their appreciation for our efforts, whether it’s through saving premium dollars that can be reallocated towards student programs and curriculum, finding an insurance solution for a risk that was previously deemed uninsurable or providing clients with valuable risk management advice and resources on emerging topics affecting their students and faculty.
Additionally, I am fortunate to have the collaborative teamwork that exists within our organization. Not only does it make our work environment more enjoyable, but it also fosters the exchange of diverse perspectives and ideas to benefit our clients. &
