Madalyn Young, account executive, Gallagher, and a 2024 Health Care Power Broker winner shares below.
Risk & Insurance: How did you get your start in the commercial insurance business?
Madalyn Young: During my college years, I had the opportunity to explore the field of commercial insurance through a summer internship with Gallagher. This experience allowed me to work closely with the health care team, which sparked my interest in pursuing a full-time career in this area.
Upon graduation, I embarked on my professional journey, coming up through Gallagher’s Career Achievement Training Program. This program equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage my own clients and develop a robust book of business, specializing in the healthcare, life sciences, digital health and technology sectors.
R&I: What services or consultation are health care insureds most in need of these days and why?
MY: With the increasing prevalence of cyberattacks, particularly targeting health care companies, establishing a robust cyber program and team is essential.
A high-profile attack on a health care technology vendor last year highlighted the importance of this. The attack resulted in numerous business interruption claims and significant financial losses for many insureds.
There is a need for comprehensive cyber risk management strategies that address both preventative measures and responsive actions.
Additionally, effective business continuity planning is crucial to have in place to ensure that the health care organizations can maintain operations and protect patient data in the event of a cyber incident.
R&I: Was there a mentor or mentors who proved invaluable to you in your career advancement?
MY: Early in my career, I had the privilege of being introduced to Larry Hansard, who has played a pivotal role in my career development.
His mentorship not only helped me navigate the complexities of the industry but also instilled in me the confidence to pursue ambitious goals. Starting my career in a new city, having a mentor like Larry was crucial to my success. He has opened doors to numerous opportunities that I may not have otherwise encountered as a young insurance professional.
I attribute a significant portion of my achievements to Larry’s guidance and support.
R&I: How would you describe this work and this industry to someone who doesn’t work in it?
MY: I would describe the insurance industry as a problem-solving field. Our role as a broker is to develop solutions that help our clients safeguard themselves and their businesses, enabling them to continue effectively serving our communities.
The commercial insurance industry plays a crucial role in helping businesses operate with confidence, knowing they have a plan in place to handle unexpected events. &
