As part of our ongoing coverage of our Power Broker winners and finalists, we are publishing expanded profiles of these outstanding professionals as part of our Brilliance in Focus series, sponsored by Philadelphia Insurance Companies. Here we speak to Tania Gainham, Senior Vice President for Marsh Risk and a 2025 Power Broker in the Education category.

Risk & Insurance: Thanks for talking with us Tania. What are the most difficult lines to place for your higher ed clients and why?

Tania Gainham: The most difficult lines to place for our higher education clients are cyber, sexual misconduct/abuse liability, and student unions, largely because each presents unique and evolving risk challenges. Cyber exposures continue to rise in both frequency and severity across campuses, as institutions manage large volumes of sensitive student, faculty, and research data while often operating with legacy systems and extensive third-party integrations. Sexual misconduct and abuse liability remains particularly difficult because of the potential for significant long-tail payouts, heightened regulatory scrutiny, and the reputational sensitivity insurers must carefully evaluate. Student unions also continue to challenge the marketplace due to the complexity of the risk profiles involved, which often requires us to explore subscription or Lloyd’s-based placements outside of North America in order to secure appropriate coverage solutions.

R&I: What do you see as the traits a successful broker must always develop and improve on?

TG: I believe a successful broker must first understand how to genuinely connect with clients and build trusted relationships. The best brokers are proactive — they look ahead at a client’s operations, identify potential exposures early, and provide guidance before the client even has to ask. Strong technical knowledge of coverages and market appetite is also essential, as is the ability to translate a client’s operations into underwriting language that carriers can clearly understand. In addition, successful brokers cultivate strong carrier relationships and bring creativity to customizing solutions for complex risks. Just as important are clear communication, responsiveness under pressure, and maintaining a consultative mindset that focuses on long-term risk reduction rather than simply negotiating price.

R&I: In your interactions with your colleagues, what are the traits that you admire in them?

TG: In my interactions with colleagues, I most admire people who are collaborative and generous with their expertise because those qualities help teams solve complex placements more effectively and efficiently. I also value colleagues who are naturally curious and committed to continuous learning, since staying informed ultimately benefits both our clients and our team. Tenacity and accountability are also traits I respect greatly. Colleagues who consistently follow through, take ownership of challenges, and remain calm under stakeholder pressure help build trust not only internally, but also with clients and carrier partners. Those qualities create a strong foundation for teamwork and long-term professional relationships.

R&I: What goals have you set for yourself, either on a personal or professional level, or both?

TG: Professionally, I am focused on continuing to deepen my specialization within the higher education sector while also expanding relationships with carriers that truly understand campus-related risks. Over the next 12 months, one of my key goals is to lead more campus risk assessment projects that translate into measurable premium reductions or improved coverage terms for clients. I also want to continue mentoring junior brokers on complex placement strategies and help develop the next generation of talent within the industry. On a personal level, I’m working toward creating stronger work-life boundaries to support sustainable client service. That includes maintaining clearer scheduling practices, prioritizing workloads more effectively, and protecting regular downtime so I can recharge and continue performing at a high level professionally. &
