Risk & Insurance: What was your personal “lightbulb moment” or the specific early-career claim where you realized this sector was where you wanted to plant your flag?
Yan Veytsman: I moved into Renewable Energy several years into my career and was immediately drawn to the momentum of the industry. It was a fast-growing space that needed strong internal subject matter expertise, and I saw an opportunity to differentiate myself by building deep knowledge in an area that was becoming increasingly important.
R&I: How has your approach to your work evolved over the course of your career?
YV: Over the last several years, I’ve learned to embrace delegation. While it may sound counterintuitive, you have to find ways to “replace” yourself in certain areas. That’s the only way to free up capacity to focus on higher-value work and more strategic projects, rather than getting stuck in every detail yourself.
R&I: What is your biggest challenge on the job in this current market?
YV: One of the biggest challenges in the current market is simply managing time and priorities. There is always more to do, and as business moves faster, you have to be very honest about where your time adds the most value. For me, that has meant getting more comfortable delegating and outsourcing certain tasks so I can stay focused on the work that really requires my attention and experience.
R&I: What advice would you give to young professionals in the space?
YV: I would focus on developing three qualities:
- Take initiative: Find ways to be resourceful and add value without waiting to be asked.
- Attention to detail: Small oversights can become much larger issues down the road.
- Adaptability: Learn to adjust your approach and your time to match your clients’ pace and your team’s dynamics.
