When the City of Reynoldsburg began construction on a $28 million building, HR director Sandra Boller turned to John Walker. “I knew very little on what builder’s risk was,” said Boller. “John walked through the process, showing me what was important to know.”

The building would host the YMCA, a branch of Ohio Health and an office for the City. The Y wanted to have its own policies, but because the City owned the building, “John sat with the shareholders to discuss why it would be in the best interest of the City to carry the policies,” said Boller.

The Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority also implemented a major commercial construction last year. Maria Mercurio, CFO, said the Authority decided to expand its Hilton Columbus Downtown Hotel to house an additional 1,000 guests.

Walker was paramount in getting them what they needed: “He guided us through the process so that the Authority could purchase an OCIP and builder’s risk insurance program before the build began,” she said. “He kept us informed on what we needed to know to implement the appropriate insurance programs for the project.”

Additionally, because the Authority issued bonds to finance the expansion, it had to review its entire insurance portfolio.

“John reviewed our program first and showed us the places that would need improvement in order to meet credit rating expectations,” explained Mercurio.

“As an entity, the Authority has an aggressive and competitive approach to how services are acquired. It is a testament to John’s service that he has been with us so long.”
