Gallagher Broker Nichole Johnson Recognized as a 2025 Education Power Broker
Nichole Johnson, Managing Director, Higher Education Practice, Gallagher
Higher ed employees are following healthier habits, which is due in part to Nichole Johnson, who helps universities review and improve the health and wellbeing benefits offered to employees.
Johnson discovered that Rock Valley College was underfunding its health care budget and was not prepared for high-cost claimant risk. Using detailed actuarial guidance, negotiating with carriers, and adjusting its individual stop-loss level, Johnson and her team accurately set equivalent rates and explained the change to the college’s board of trustees and benefits committee.
Johnson and her team also placed the pharmacy program in the Gallagher Pharmacy Collective after conducting conversations with the school’s CFO.
“She actively sought out a variety of proposals for our employees — not just group medical, but vision and supplemental things like supplemental life and pet insurance — all those options so we can offer a really good price to our employees,” said Ellen Olson, director of benefits and HR operations at the college.
At National Louis University, Holly Battaglia, director of benefits and HR, appreciates Johnson’s well-researched approach: “She’s data driven. She does her homework,” Battaglia said.
She helped the university learn more about what employees wanted from their benefits. One positive result has been that 78% of university employees are participating in preventative health screenings, a 10% increase over the previous year.
