Opinion: RISKWORLD™ 2025 Impressions from Risk & Insurance Editor Dan Reynolds

Is to know RIMS to love it?
I’m in my 17th year of attending RIMS conferences, which we now call RISKWORLD™. Boston, Vancouver, San Diego, Denver, etc.; the list of places it has taken us all to goes on and on. So many memories made; so much information taken in.
For introverts, the sheer size of the conference and the number of people attending can at first seem overwhelming. But we adjust.
I’ll say this about the events unfolding in Chicago this week. Covid did its work to suppress the interest in face to face conferences. But this is the first time in a long time that I’ve felt this level of energy pulsing through the conference.
Perhaps to some degree it is the location. Call me a fan of Chicago and I am sure many other people see it the same way. The architecture, the style of the inhabitants, and logistically, its Midwestern location make it an attractive meeting place for so many business leaders.
I can’t remember when I have seen the show floor at this conference so busy. And talking to those who rent floor space for the conference gave me the impression that they were having the same reaction.
Josh Salter, senior director of communications for RIMS, said the attendance at this year’s conference and show exceeded 10,800.
A DJ on the floor that houses the expo hall? Good move!
Making it through all of these meetings and taking all these steps can take it out of you. Hearing something that gives your step a little beat and a little lift as you climb the stairs and escalators helps. Music helps.
From a topical standpoint, RIMS and this industry may be benefitting from the sheer discomfort that current events are visiting on business leaders. The uncertainty caused by edicts from Washington, D.C. is echoing throughout this conference this week.
Talk to construction sector underwriters, marine underwriters, or brokers who distribute environmental coverage and the word “uncertainty” comes up time and time again this week. The tariff wars, no matter how long they last, are sure to interrupt supply chains. The labor supply is also under pressure.
AI is being talked about, as it should be. Most of the people I talked to view it optimistically. It carries risk, but the benefits it holds for humanity are being talked about here in a positive light.
I got the sense that people need risk management information this year to a degree that might not have been possible two to three years ago.
Another thing I noticed? A lot of younger faces!
I sport gray hair, as many of us do, but I can’t remember seeing so many young people at the conference.
They are a force; they are here in numbers. And you know what? They don’t carry themselves like rookies. They don’t have that 1,000-yard stare that so many of us picked up as we labored through our first industry conferences.
They carry themselves with confidence.
The Spencer Educational Foundation hosted a global student case competition and funded eight teams to attend RISKWORLD™ from countries around the world including South Africa, Nepal, Australia, India and also from within the U.S. It also provided numerous grants to universities that enabled them to bring students to the conference.
“And we have long partnered with RIMS as a sponsor of the Anita Benedetti Student Involvement Program which gives travel stipends to individual student applicants to attend RISKWORLD™,” said Megan Miller, the executive director of the foundation.
Perhaps this next risk management generation may be exceptional in ways we haven’t discerned yet. RIMS’s Salter said more than 400 students attended this year’s conference, which is another advancement that is very much welcomed in this corner.
I also can’t remember having seen the press room at RISKWORLD™ this busy. Lots of new faces there as well, which gives me hope that perhaps there is a new wave of insurance and risk management journalists ready to do their part to disseminate information about this vital industry.
Philadelphia, you are next and you have big shoes to fill. RISKWORLD™ in Chicago this year is carrying a glimmer that I can’t remember associating with the conference in a very long time. &
