The Makeup of Medical Services 20 Years Post Injury
The types of medical treatments, pharmaceuticals, and services provided for aging workers’ compensation claims shift substantially as claims age. NCCI Holdings Inc., a nationwide research and rating organization, reported in 2013 that “it is likely that more than 10% of the cost of medical benefits for the workplace injuries that occur this year will be for services provided more than two decades into the future.”
That percentage has been growing and could continue expanding, NCCI said. The pie charts above provide an example of how medical services for a claim can shift after the claim has remained open for more than 20 years. The charts rely on claims for injuries that occurred in the 1980s.
