Introducing the 2025 Executives to Watch
Our information channels have become so muddled, vapid really in many cases, that certain truths that we knew to be self-evident have become less firmly believed. Things that are unimportant dominate social media feeds, while things that are important slip into the foggy backwaters of our memories.
One of these truths, and it is an unassailable truth, is that the U.S. economy is the strongest in the world and will remain so. Citizens of every nation want to trade in it, and many people move here to take part in it, and by doing so, make it that much stronger.
Another truth is that insurance, specific to our focus, commercial insurance, comprises the backbone of this economy. Despite the swirling winds of periodic misfortunes, insurance remains relevant, and there is loads of opportunity in it.
You just need to know where to look.
This brings us to our Executives to Watch for 2025. These are the insurance carrier executives who are taking on new roles, sometimes with new companies, and are expected to lead teams of underwriters and claims professionals in delivering the risk transfer products that allow business leaders to secure and grow their enterprises.
George Williams, head of small market commercial lines for Nationwide, and a 2025 Risk & Insurance Executive to Watch, did a good job of identifying this dynamic.
“I have friends who are small business owners, and they are successful because they are skilled in their particular area of expertise, such as HVAC or plumbing,” Williams said.
“They are not trained risk management professionals. Navigating insurance coverages and planning for the potential impacts of weather risk or cyberattacks is not their forte. Nationwide, together with our trusted distribution partners, needs to answer those questions for them, address their concerns, and provide confidence that they’re protected by a trusted carrier that stands behind them,” Williams added.
These Executives to Watch must not only keep an undiluted focus on delivering excellent service to their valuable customers, they must also be dyed-in-the-wool leaders. That means caring about the people they supervise and giving them the means to achieve success.
Here’s what Nora Deveau, deputy chief claims officer for Arch Insurance, North America, had this to say about leadership.
“First, we aim to strike a balance between emphasizing a collaborative environment that’s all about teamwork, while also acknowledging individual contributions to that team. In order to encourage collaboration, we avoid siloing off our different claims units,” she said.
“The second key element of our culture is that we strive to encourage and celebrate intellectual curiosity. We seek to hire people who want to learn, who share our emphasis on collaboration and who want to be exposed to different parts of the claims department. If a current employee expresses an interest in learning more about a part of the insurance business, we work with them, supporting their education and helping them to seek out opportunities where they can expand their skillset.
“Finally, we’ve recently put a concerted effort into increasing transparency around how each of our initiatives and projects affect the bottom line. We try to make it clear to each of our employees what the organization’s goals are and how their work is ultimately contributing to these goals. When our employees can clearly see the positive effect that their work is having on the organization, I think that motivates them to strive for excellence.”
These are excellent words of wisdom. People like Nora Deveau help keep our economy strong. Please join us in celebrating Deveau and the rest of our 2025 Executives to Watch. &
