How Hiscox’ Mary Boyd Works to Unlock Insurance Opportunities Through Education
In uncovering the best business opportunities in commercial insurance it could be true that education plays a greater role than marketing. At least that’s what Mary Boyd and her colleagues at Hiscox think.
“We conducted some insightful research last year where we spoke to 1,000 U.S. small business owners, and using some brilliant analysis from our underwriters, we discovered that 75% of them were underinsured,” Boyd said.
“Naturally, we wanted to dig into why so many business owners are risking so much, and we found widespread insurance illiteracy. Eighty-three percent of business owners don’t know what general liability covers and 71% don’t understand what a business owner’s policy covers,” she added.
“There’s also the pervasive misconception of insurance as a one-and-done purchase, when in truth, insurance should grow every year or two with their business. It’s our responsibility — collectively — to make insurance as easy to understand as possible, lose the jargon, and to educate small business owners on why regularly updating their insurance is vital,” she said.
Boyd was previously CEO of the independent agency business of personal lines insurer Plymouth Rock Assurance, and has also held roles with The Hartford, Explorer Insurance and Chubb.
Hiscox has been selling policies direct online to small businesses for years. Boyd said the company will always offer that option, but can deliver service to small business owners through agents and brokers as well.
“Hiscox is the Friday night dinner of insurance. Sometimes you might fancy calling your favorite restaurant from the couch, other evenings you may just order using an app on your mobile phone because you already know their exact dish you’re in the mood for, or you may fancy going to the restaurant and receiving individualized care,” Boyd said.
“How to buy insurance is just as much of a personal choice for our customers, and the beauty of Hiscox is that we’re committed to continuing to offer that choice, whether that’s direct through our website, over the phone with one of our licensed agents, or through a broker or partner,” she added.
In addition to general liability, business owners’ policies and cyber insurance, Boyd said Hiscox launched a professional liability product for contractors in July. The coverage has specialized versions for general contractors and artisan subcontractors.
“As masters of their craft, we believe that contractors should be able to focus on what they do best without the threat of potential legal trouble lurking around every corner. The most exciting thing about this particular product is that it’s unique for its digital availability, and customers can obtain a quote online within five minutes,” she said. &
