Ironshore and Liberty Mutual veteran Toby Smith has been tapped to lead the specialty underwriting business for Mosaic in the Americas.

Smith made his mark as the leader of a sizable environmental underwriting business. It was there that Mosaic’s leaders, who were with Ironshore at the time, saw his work firsthand.

“Toby is a longtime colleague with an exceptional track record that has seen him build the largest environmental business in the market,” said Mosaic’s Co-CEO Mitch Blaser.

“He will be instrumental in continuing our growth trajectory and accelerating our strategic ambitions across specialty product lines globally and in the critical U.S. region.”

Here is what Smith had to say about the opportunity. “Our focus is on specialty products with high technical barriers to entry that require expertise to execute the most complex risks — and that’s reflected in our team. Our people truly are market leaders across product lines, with historical track records that consistently outperform the market,” Smith said.

“As well as knowledge, they bring an empowered, entrepreneurial type of energy that’s refreshing and very effective in amplifying Mosaic’s brand reach, even as a young company. Every single employee is an owner of the company and receives equity on day one. That’s not a common thing to see in our industry, but the benefits are profound: employeeowners feel the freedom and authority to be agile and accountable, to act decisively, and to build the business with real enthusiasm. Everyone’s working in the same direction — you don’t get that in larger organizations,” he added.

“Our very different model also helps distinguish Mosaic,” Smith said. “We have a hybrid agency structure that optimizes capital by matching our Lloyd’s syndicate’s capacity with that of a growing number of trade partners. It means we can deliver significant syndicated capacity in high-demand lines across the North American market. We take a piece of every risk we write and hold full claims authority and settlement control. Notably, we also have a single P&L that facilitates cross-border collaboration, essentially allowing us to bring global resources and expertise to our local clients and brokers.”

Smith, like many, knows that to make the business run effectively, he must find the right talent in key positions. That is no easy task these days.

“The ability to recruit the very best talent in a competitive market isn’t easy — but you need the right model to win trust and attract and retain proven leaders. It’s really about culture, and I’m confident Mosaic offers what people look for: an enterprise that empowers individuals who have the judgment and expertise to engage, to succeed, and to show the intellectual curiosity to stay ahead of trends. A nimble organization motivates forward-thinking people to do that and equips them to stay ahead. Mosaic’s leadership is making the investments — in AI, in advantageous partnerships — to allow our people to be successful in an ever-changing market,” Smith said. &
