The 2025 Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge has reached unprecedented global participation, with 244 students from 61 university teams across 16 countries competing to develop climate risk management strategies for Huntington, West Virginia.

This year’s challenge has made significant strides in expanding its reach to new institutions and underrepresented groups, according to RIMS. Thirty-eight teams were first-time applicants, indicating the competition’s growing appeal and accessibility to universities worldwide. Additionally, nine participating universities were Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), reflecting the organizers’ commitment to fostering diversity within the risk management profession.

Eight Finalist Teams Advance to Chicago

After evaluation of the teams’ risk management reports for Huntington, eight university finalists have been selected to advance to the stage at RISKWORLD in Chicago.

The finalists teams represent: DePauw University (Greencastle, Indiana), Institute of Insurance and Risk Management (Hyderabad, India), Saint Joseph’s University (Philadelphia), Tribhuvan University (Kathmandu, Nepal), University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia), University of South Africa (Pretoria, South Africa), University of Wisconsin-Madison (Madison, Wisconsin), and University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa).

The Spencer-RIMS Student Risk Management Challenge requires students to demonstrate mastery of multiple dimensions of climate risk management.

Teams must first identify specific impacts climate change poses to Huntington’s infrastructure, economy, and residents. Beyond mere identification, participants must develop proactive recommendations to address these vulnerabilities before they escalate into crises. Finally, teams must outline practical implementation strategies that consider Huntington’s unique circumstances, resources, and constraints.

Risk Management Judging Panel

The competition benefits from the expertise of six risk management professionals representing diverse sectors: Pamela Bradshaw, who brings broad risk management experience to the panel; Kristy Coleman, director of risk management at Warner Bros. Discovery; Adam Ennamli, chief risk officer at General Bank of Canada; Cynthia Garcia, chief risk officer at construction firm Bernards; Cristian Iglesias, who manages risk services for The Cheesecake Factory Inc.; and Tyler Vaughan, an insurance risk analyst for Avery Dennison.

On May 4, the eight finalist university teams will present their comprehensive findings to the judging panel, facing live questions that will test their understanding and analytical skills. This initial round serves as a critical filtering mechanism where teams must demonstrate their mastery of risk identification, reporting, analysis, and strategic implementation.

The judging committee will select the top three performing teams to advance and showcase their solutions on May 5 during an open session at RISKWORLD, where all conference attendees can witness the culmination of months of intensive research and preparation. The winning team will be announced May 5.
