Gallagher Broker Thomas Ryan Recognized as a 2025 At Large Power Broker
Thomas Ryan, RVP Casualty Practice Leader – Midwest and Great Lakes, Gallagher
Thomas Ryan’s use of advanced data analytics, actuarial modeling, and alternate program structures helps him best meet his clients’ complex needs.
But for Ryan, simply relying on the models isn’t enough. He wants his clients to understand the results and how they can best use them, saying, “I take pride in walking my clients through the output of the modeling so they understand it, walking them through economic cost/benefit analysis and ultimately making sure they understand our specific recommendations around program structure.”
Ryan used his analytics prowess to help a client manage their risk profile. He ran advanced simulation modeling to determine if the client was taking on an appropriate amount of risk in their primary fronting arrangements that their single-parent captive funds. The results showed they were taking on too much risk.
To help resolve this imbalance, Ryan negotiated a reduction in their auto retention from $15 million to $10 million, general liability from $10 million to $5 million, and workers’ compensation (deductible and SIR) from $5 million to $1 million.
The total additional fixed costs to reduce risk to the corporate balance sheet and the statutory surplus in their captive were only an additional $100K. Ryan worked with the client and reduced a material amount of risk out of their primary retentions, and while maintaining their umbrella/excess limits.
This type of creative restructuring by leveraging the simulation modeling should help the client with long-term sustainability.
