Kathryn Christensen believes a captive should be structured so that it can grow, evolve and support the parent company’s core business. To that end, she has spent the last year addressing the biggest immediate challenge for her clients — the hard market, which has led to increased premiums, decreased capacity and new exclusions and restrictions on terms and conditions.

For one client, she developed a captive solution for property and casualty programs, leading a project team of casualty, property and specialty lines brokers; actuaries; and captive management colleagues to create a holistic approach to the client’s insurance program.

Clients reported her creative solutions, coupled with a realistic understanding of their risk appetites and workflows, made for a winning combination.

In 2021, Kevin Wyatt, head of insurance and business risk, Robinhood Markets, worked with Christensen to set up a captive in Hawaii: “Kathryn was great helping us coordinate with the actuaries, with the different regulatory agencies, and walking us through the various aspects of Hawaii versus other domiciles.”

“In what was record time, she helped us with a feasibility study and two different sets of renewal proposals, including a captive we set up in June,” said John Mark Jennings, risk manager of In-N-Out Burger. “It resulted in not only a very smooth process but also huge savings for our company.”

In fact, Jennings ultimately asked Christensen to manage the new captive program.
