Over the past year, renewable energy developers and operators faced significant challenges securing operational insurance coverage for NatCAT perils such as severe convective storms, hail and tornadoes. As one of John Katilus’ clients’ renewal approached, it became evident the coverage limits required for severe convective storms were simply unavailable at a reasonable cost. That put the company at serious risk of non-compliance with lender requirements, potentially jeopardizing project financing agreements and financial stability.

Because the limits required had never before been achieved in the market, Katilus and team had to develop bespoke, global, multi layer per occurrence coverage with an automatic reinstatement at a predetermined premium for all NatCAT events. The innovative structure included an optional parametric component, enabling underwriting partners to meet the client’s lender requirements while protecting their balance sheet.

In another case, “John and his colleagues developed a first-of-its-kind excess convective storm scheme specific for our state that provided us with much needed capacity in a high-hail risk zone,” said a vice president of risk. “The team employed innovative tools to model the project portfolio, reallocated NatCAT capacity and engaged in a series of persistent negotiations to deliver the program.

Because of John and his colleagues’ committed dedication, creative thinking, strong partner relationships, and incredible teamwork, we enjoy much needed NatCAT insurance protection.”
