2025 RIMS Preview: The Future of Cyber Risk Management

Cyber threats are evolving rapidly, often faster than companies can respond. And at a time when organizations need cyber coverage and proactive assistance, the regulatory scrutiny of cyber risk and intensifying data privacy protection laws make it challenging to keep pace with change. Risk professionals need sound advice, current information, and forward-looking solutions to manage these threats.
At this year’s RISKWORLD in Chicago, participants can attend the session on the Innovation Stage titled “Ransom, Regulation, Kinetics, and Biometrics: Cutting-Edge Insurance Solutions for Today’s Risk Landscape.”
Promising to be a deep exploration of the future of cyber risk management, the session will be led by Emily Cummins, Director of Risk Management at The Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc. (CBN); Roberta Sutton, Partner at Potomac Law Group; and Chris Keegan, Senior Managing Director and Cyber and Technology Practice Leader at Brown and Brown Specialty Risk Services. The speakers will bring their unique perspectives and experiences to the audience during the 30-minute panel on Monday, May 5.
Where Cybersecurity Meets Risk Management
What started as a relatively simple risk of data breaches and isolated phishing attempts has morphed into international sanctions for ransomware payments and the threat of biometric privacy lawsuits. New forms of cyber threats, called kinetic cyber risk, combine the risk of physical and digital damage and must be addressed differently.
The session at RISKWORLD will help attendees understand both the emerging risks and how to assess what current insurance products are covering these evolving exposures, where coverage gaps exist, and how to fill them.
Cummins brings a long career of experience in non-profits, having worked previously at a non-profit and as a specialist in the underwriting department at Church Mutual Insurance Company, and in her current role at The Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc. She brings real-life experience of how organizations, especially non-profits, are handling cyber threats and claims.
Sutton is a legal expert on data privacy and cyber regulation. She is known as a national authority and thought leader in complex insurance matters. She counsels clients on complex insurance and risk management issues and defends insurance companies in state and federal trials. During the RISKWORLD session, Sutton will focus on the legal intricacies of ransomware compliance, fund transfer fraud, and biometric vulnerabilities. Her expertise will allow her to opine on how insurers can best manage these challenging exposures.
Keegan is an expert on cyber, privacy, technology, and media E&O insurance. His experience includes working with the development of new insurance products designed to transfer electronic risk, and he has published several articles and books on privacy, intellectual property, and technology.
Expected Takeaways and Insights
Attendees will leave the session with several key insights and important takeaways:
- Experiences gleaned from real-world examples of complex cyber claims, including social engineering, biometric data issues, and ransomware payments.
- Breakdown and analysis of important legal and regulatory frameworks shaping cyber insurance.
- Practical steps for maximizing recovery under cyber insurance coverage, including what to do and ask before a loss happens.
