The Predict & Prevent™ Podcast Episode 1: Today’s Risks Are Creating an Existential Urgency for Risk Management and Insurance to Act

How can the insurance industry utilize a Predict & Prevent approach? The Institutes' CEO Pete Miller dives into this question in a bi-weekly podcast.
By: | June 1, 2023

As risk management and insurance struggle to keep up with today’s more volatile and costly risk landscape, moving risk management from traditional detect and repair to predict and prevent is the focus of “Existential Urgency,” the first episode in a new podcast series from The Institutes called Predict & Prevent™.

Host Pete Miller, CPCU, the CEO of The Institutes, sits down with Sean Kevelighan, president and CEO of the Insurance Information Institute, to discuss why Predict & Prevent is needed now more than ever.

Their discussion covers some of the disruptive forces that are pressuring insurance, how risky behavior and choices are adding to loss costs, and the danger to society if insurance becomes unaffordable or unavailable because these problems are not addressed.

The good news, Miller said, is that technology is increasingly available that can give us real-time information about risk, creating new opportunities to predict losses and take steps to prevent them from occurring. Making our properties and communities more resilient also can blunt the impact of growing climate risks, Kevelighan said.

Another critical element, Kevelighan said, is a change in mindset by consumers that they cannot continue to engage in risky behavior, or put themselves in harm’s way, without severe financial consequences.

“We should all be risk managers in this day and age,” Kevelighan said. “We need to understand there is a collective responsibility for all—communities, consumers, policymakers, and industries—to help improve how and where we are living. Because the fact is more and more people are living in harm’s way.”
