QBE Insurance Group has appointed Jamie Thompson to the newly created role of global director of Data Centers, tasking him with developing an integrated insurance proposition for the fast-growing critical infrastructure sector.

“The data center sector is rapidly growing and evolving with the advent of AI. Sheer size and scale, power and redundancy requirements, choice of locations around the world mean that the sector increasingly needs adapted solutions backed by deep expertise and global reach,” said Cécile Fresneau, managing director of QBE’s Insurance Division.

Thompson, who is based in London, previously led QBE International Markets’ Financial Lines team and also served as director for QBE Canada. In his new role, he will draw on more than 20 years at QBE to unite expertise across underwriting, risk engineering, claims, and distribution into a cohesive global proposition.

“Coverage gaps are emerging and the complex and interconnected risks associated with data centers will need sophisticated solutions,” Thompson said.

The appointment comes as global data center capacity is forecast to double between 2026 and 2030, driven by cloud migration and AI adoption, with the sector requiring up to $3 trillion in infrastructure investment by 2030. &
