Introducing the 2025 Power Brokers

Our Power Brokers give the lie to the misrepresentations that insurance sector companies and their employees are driven by greed and lack compassion.

I recently posted on LinkedIn my wish that those who malign insurance could have my job for a bit.

If only they could read the hundreds of Power Broker® applications we process each year, they would gain a much better understanding of the hard, sometimes brilliant work that commercial insurance brokers put in to protect the best interests of their clients.

If only I could receive a dollar for every time I’ve talked to a risk manager, and they have said something along the lines of “this broker feels like an extension of my team” or “I don’t know what I would do without this broker.”

I might not be rich, but the windfall would probably buy me a decent night out, with my eye drifting toward the upper reaches of the wine list.

More often than not, when I’ve asked, “On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate this broker’s customer service skills?” the answer is “A ten.”

“And how about their industry knowledge, specifically, their knowledge of your business and its industry sector?”

“Also a ten.”

“Eleven” is something we hear as well.

To our delight and satisfaction, the Power Broker contest is as competitive as ever. Applications pour in every October by the hundreds. A team of editors and writers work through November, December and most of January determining the winners. Over time, the contest morphs. Categories that remain highly competitive include Real Estate, Construction, Health Care and Energy.

The Private Client category, those brokers that serve high net-worth clients, has also become very competitive in recent years.

This contest gets a lot of attention in the industry, which we are also glad about. But we are always interested in ways to improve it. Are their industry sectors that brokers are increasingly doing business in that aren’t included in the contest? Would we be better served to break down certain categories, splitting finance, for example, into a Financial Institutions and a Private Equity category? How about Health Care? Should we break out the practitioners from the health care institutions?

We recognize that it’s a bit of work to apply for this contest. Therefore, we thank the communications and marketing folks who keep those applications coming our way.

Once again, congratulations to this year’s winners and finalists. We hope to see you and many of your compatriots back in the contest next year. &
