Here we are talking to Lauren Carroll-Allan, a 2025 Power Broker in the Traditional Energy category.

Risk & Insurance: What do you find most fulfilling about working in the energy sector as a commercial insurance broker?

Lauren Carroll-Allan: I am so grateful that I found work that allows me to make a difference on a local, national, and global scale to address climate change. The renewable energy sector faces a constant change in government policies, trade policies, and technology, so I learn new things every single day. I especially love working with my clients who are on the cutting edge of technology innovation, helping to ensure their technology is bankable, and contributing to their ability to positively impact our planet’s energy resilience.

R&I: How important was mentorship to you as you advanced in this industry?

LCA: I started my career on the client side as a risk manager nearly 15 years ago, and I hired members of the team I work with now as our insurance brokers. All of my early education about the intricacies of this industry came from our broker partners. After I joined the broker side of the business, I have continued to benefit from dedicated mentorship from senior members of our placement team. I am extremely lucky to work on a team with a number of very experienced brokers in the power and renewables industry, who are endlessly generous with their knowledge and support. I believe a brokerage simply cannot succeed in this business without the dedication to educate and mentor employees.

R&I: What would you tell a recent college graduate who is considering risk management and insurance as a career?

LCA: My advice to a college graduate considering risk management or insurance as a career, or really any career, is that the most important factor in job satisfaction is having positive relationships with your co-workers and managers. So for young people starting, I would say that it is less important what specific industry vertical or insurance product you start working with, and more important to find a team with managers who are supportive, and a company with a culture that includes dedicated to education and employee well-being. When you get that support early in your career, you can always grow and find the specific industry niche that you prefer later.

R&I: What emerging risks in the energy sector would owners of energy companies do well to keep their eyes on?

LCA: I think the primary risks are also the most difficult to mitigate, namely the fluctuating government policies related to renewable energy credits and trade sanctions. However, despite these fluctuations I do believe that the support for renewable energy will continue to grow over time, and that there is a bright future for renewable energy growth. There’s no going back, especially with the growing demand for energy to power data centers. &
