When a pressure tank feeding an HVAC system leaked inside an Illinois Scott-Morgan School District school, a large flooding loss previously would have been inevitable. Instead, a small, round water leak sensor placed in the tank area triggered an alert for superintendent Kevin Blankenship.
That moment captures the impact of an easily deployed water detection program created by broker Marcus Henthorn for public sector insurance pools nationwide. Henthorn recognized that water damage was the most frequent and costly loss facing schools, particularly since past carrier-led sensor programs failed, because they were too complex to deploy:
“He designed a whole new approach, removing every operational barrier and giving members full control,” said Mike Toeben, chairman of the Prairie State Insurance Cooperative in Illinois. The result was a pool-owned, easy-to-install system that allowed districts to deploy the sensor pucks in minutes, receive real time alerts and intervene before losses escalated. “Our largest claims are always water damage,” Toeben noted. “It’s been a huge money saver for us.”
Craig Mobley, business manager, Knoxville School District, said the value goes beyond tech. The district is a member of the Iowa Public School Insurance Program. “Marcus brings so much value … he’s able to see pool programs from throughout the country,” he said. By combining operational simplicity, measurable results and a deep understanding of public entity risk, Henthorn redefined proactive and cost-effective loss control for schools.
