Marsh Broker Matthew Kern Recognized as a 2021 Environmental Power Broker
Matthew Kern, Senior Vice President, Marsh
“Our company has struggled to close a risk gap we’ve had for many years for potential pollution liability,” said a director of risk management.
“Matthew was able to arrange a meeting with an underwriter from a new market, which for the first time in our company’s history, made this important coverage available to us.”
Another large client in heavy industry has a three-year pollution policy that runs through the end of 2021. Matthew Kern placed the original policy with a new carrier after the incumbent left the segment.
“We have a renewal kick-off call in January 2021,” said the senior risk analyst, “but we keep Matthew busy. Most recently, we asked him to obtain favorable coverage with a recent acquisition of an operation in Mexico.
He reviewed due diligence and documentation to provide guidance on coverage, including technical issues.”
The acquisition required extensive discussions with the client’s primary carrier to avoid coverage restrictions for legacy risk. Such preparations are not unusual in the client’s industry and especially not for that particular client, which is an active aggregator of various operations.
In industries where simple placements are difficult, Kern has been able to add coverage for cleanup of pollution conditions the insured discovered on its properties, which previously had been excluded; added a portion of policy aggregate for dedicated legal defense costs; and increased business interruption sublimits.
