When a nonprofit discovered that a hacker had accessed the email account of a staff member in accounts payable, time was critical.
“There was no telling to what extent they were able to change things,” said a finance executive at the organization.
Alexandra Bretschneider quickly marshaled the resources needed to contain and mitigate the threat.
As a cyber specialist, Bretschneider not only brings a deep understanding of the coverage but also of the technical issues at play when breaches occur. She began her career in the IT risk advisory practice at Ernst & Young and she is a regular speaker about cybersecurity at conferences around the U.S.
“She knows the landscape. She knows the threats,” said a health care executive who also relied on Bretschneider in the wake of a breach.
While she is an effective advocate following a breach, Bretschneider also works with her clients to ensure they are protected from hackers and prepared to respond.
The board at Cargas Systems, a software company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, tapped Bretschneider to help run a tabletop exercise playing out how the company would react to a breach. Some cyber experts were going to charge thousands of dollars for the exercise, said Cargas president and CEO Nate Scott. But Bretschneider made it available at no cost. “That has really helped us from a communication and protocol standpoint,” Scott said.
