If you need a creative solution for an unusual insurance situation, Timothy Ellis is your broker. Just ask Nick Hensgen, the director of corporate risk management at BrightSpring Health Services. Ellis helped the company to structure its July 1st renewals while taking into account the divestment of a unit that was only set to be finalized at the end of December.
The challenge was that the soon-to-be-divested unit amounted to a disproportionate ratio of the group’s insurance losses. Hensgen wanted the July renewals to reflect the reduced levels of risk that would stay in its portfolio after the transition was concluded. “Normally, what would happen to policies like workers’ compensation policies, auto or property excess was that, once those locations fall off mid-year, some of them would generate refunds, but not until the audit in the following year. And for some of the policies, the excess policy specifically, we would not get any return premium,” he said.
Ellis suggested that the company broke out locations to be divested and put them on separate policies, so that, when the sale was finalized, the firm would get a pro rata premium. “The locations that could not be put on separate policies for one reason or the other, were able to get agreements with the insurance companies to return a certain amount of premium when the sale was final,” Hensgen explained.
