Wildfires that have been traced to utilities drove a hardening of the excess liability market across the country in 2024. Insurers began seeking premium increases estimated from 50% to as much as 200%.

Luckily, Christine Palomba was there to help. “Christine was pivotal at navigating wildfire liability constraints for utilities in 2024,” said one insurance manager. “This was a challenging year for even low-risk utilities. She assisted us with our wildfire modeling to help depict the exposure, worked tirelessly to achieve optimal results for her us. She worked effectively through her relationships and never backed down.”

The proprietary model quantified potential third-party property damage from a wildfire that started near transmission lines or distribution systems. It had originally been developed by Aon for underwriters; Palomba led the effort to revise it for insureds.

The essential differentiator was to assess actual exposure, rather than inferred risk based on area. The key collaboration was for Palomba and her team to change markets’ perception of wildfire risk. That was based on the model being originally developed for carriers, so they were already familiar with the premise.

“Christine managed an extremely complex and dynamic renewal by making best use of her relationships, industry knowledge and creativity to procure the best coverage at the most competitive terms,” said one client. “She worked tirelessly and provided daily updates so that our team could provide real-time updates to senior leadership.”
