The insurance industry has a long legacy of technical expertise and process discipline, but leadership has sometimes been considered a secondary “soft” skillset rather than a strategic strength and primary driver of success. The continuous evolution of the industry is making it clear that technical competence is not enough. Insurance has entered a time when leadership strength is a competitive advantage.

This theme was evident during the CPCU Society’s In2Leadership event held in Nashville this April. The conference included discussions about professional growth, leading volunteers, and innovative ideas, alongside a robust curriculum of courses designed and facilitated by professors from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business Executive Education.

With themes of perseverance, tenacity, and a “never say never” approach, the closing keynote session by Grammy-nominated songwriter Lee Thomas Miller underscored the similarities between writing award-winning songs and managing high-performing teams, connecting with the audience through music and storytelling.

“In2Leadership was intriguing in all aspects, said Ramya Sunad, Secretary of the CPCU Society’s Leadership Council. “The sessions were focused on technical smarts and leadership nuances. The conference was all about how to lead, connect, and thrive in this fascinating insurance industry. The keynote speaker was perfectly chosen as someone who shared the power of art and science and the strength of being tenacious in everything we do.”

Two Days of Leadership Education

The industry continues to experience the simultaneous pressures of talent shortages, technological transformation, regulatory complexity, catastrophic events and economic volatility. Organizations need leaders who can navigate these complexities while guiding people through uncertainty. Shifting from a traditional legacy where technical competency was most important to a multifaceted future where strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and adaptability are expected means leaders need to prepare differently.

In2Leadership provides a forum for addressing these leadership expectations by creating a space where emerging and established leaders can learn together. Through educational sessions, attendees learn critical leadership skills but also gain confidence by recognizing that leadership is a learned skill everyone can perfect rather than an innate personality trait limited to a select few.

An important leadership conversation happening in business today is centered on the dichotomy between influence and authority. Where traditional organizations have often emphasized hierarchy and title, modern leadership systems increasingly rely on influencing without direct authority across interconnected operations. Leaders need to successfully navigate cross-functional teams where building trust and collaboration is often a more successful approach than leading with an authoritative style.

“High-performing teams don’t happen by accident. They are built with intention. At the heart of team effectiveness is the ability to create shared direction, align efforts, and cultivate genuine commitment among members. When leaders invest in understanding what their teams actually need to thrive and not just what they assume, they unlock performance that goes far beyond what any individual could achieve alone.

“The In2Leadership Conference participants were challenged to keep asking the right questions to clarify direction, facilitate alignment, and build commitment. That’s where true transformation begins,” said Onyedikachi Ekwerike, Ph.D., Lecturer at Terry College of Business – Institute for Leadership Advancement at the University of Georgia and one of the professors who shared their expertise at In2Leadership.

The Future of Insurance Leadership

As the insurance industry continues to evolve, the future of leadership will require a hybrid skillset with foundational technical abilities and leadership skills like adaptability, strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and the ability to lead through ambiguity and change. And it is the organizations that intentionally develop these capabilities in their leaders that will position themselves for innovation, resilience, and long-term success.

Events like In2Leadership contribute meaningfully to this leadership development process by creating opportunities for collaborative leadership discussions across disciplines, companies, and generations in neutral environments. Organic mentorship and networking, alongside formal education, is a formula that works well for adult learners.

The insurance industry is built on the promise of helping people and society navigate uncertainty, and the industry is now undergoing its own period of transformative change and uncertainty. This reality makes the need for leadership development more important than ever. Conferences like In2Leadership remind us that leadership is a strategic necessity in a multifaceted industry.

“Once again, it was inspiring to experience the dedication and commitment of the CPCU volunteer leaders and other attendees—their eagerness to learn, connect with new people, and drive positive change in both themselves and the industry was motivating,” Elaine George, CPCU Society Global President and Chair of the Leadership Council said.

“The energy and optimism at the conference reflected the enduring spirit and forward momentum of the CPCU Society. As an 82-year-old organization founded during World War II, the CPCU Society continues to thrive and evolve, thanks to the passion and vision of its members and supporters. We are grateful for all the support we receive from the industry.” &
