For some companies, a good insurance program can be the difference between success and failure. So the decision by Central Crude to switch brokers midway through a contract was not taken lightly.

“We spend more on insurance than we do on fuel. It is the number one cost for our company,” said Richard Sirven, the company’s CFO.

He did not regret it though, as the broker who took over the account was Christian B. Chauvin, an executive vice president at Alliant Insurance Services. Chauvin promptly helped the company to fill insurance gaps and generally improve its risk management systems.

He stepped in to arbitrate a disagreement between the company and an insurer about workers’ comp coverages for contractors, who are an important part of Central Crude’s fleet. According to Sirven, the previous broker did not provide useful advice on the subject.

“Christian and his team were able to solve the problem with the insurance company, saving us significant amounts of money,” he said.

Sirven also stressed how proactive Chauvin is, acting, in practice, as the company’s risk manager.

“When we were buying a company in Ohio, we asked Christian for advice on the insurance aspect of the deal,” he said.
