Born and raised in Iran, Pantea Vaziri emigrated to the United States in 2001 to pursue higher education. Safe to say, she accomplished that in spades. She holds a PhD in civil and environmental engineering from Cornell University, with minors in systems engineering and applied economics.

Now, as head of global cyber analytics for Allianz, she has even more work cut out for her.

A recent Allianz Commercial cyber trends report, released in October 2024, shows the frequency of large cyber claims in the first six months of 2024 was up 14% while severity increased by 17%. This follows a mere 1% increase in reported severity during 2023. Data and privacy breachrelated elements were present in two thirds of these large losses.

“To establish a single source of truth, we recognize the importance of addressing factors beyond data itself — namely, systems, processes and human behavior. In Allianz cyber analytics, our team invests significant time in shadowing colleagues in business operations to gain a deep understanding of how data is generated at its point of entry,” Vaziri said.

“We have also created a dedicated role for a systems and processes specialist who acts as a vital link between business and IT, fully integrated within the business. This attention to detail and immersion in operational practices has allowed us to effectively manage our practices.”

They’re also prioritizing the use of analytics to help them get ahead of cyber risks.

“At Allianz commercial, we have embedded analytics directly within our business framework. The global analytics team, comprising specialists in portfolio monitoring, accumulation management, and systems and processes, reports directly to the global head of cyber,” she said.

“This structure promotes collaboration, enabling team members to maintain a comprehensive, end-to-end view of data — from booking systems to accumulation management. Furthermore, it ensures alignment with the strategic objectives outlined by the global head, enhancing our effectiveness and responsiveness to business needs.”

That’s the technical piece of what she and her team are doing. But what about the higher purpose that must motivate not only her and her colleagues, but future leaders of insurance underwriting and risk mitigation teams?

“The underwriter of the future will need a blend of critical thinking, expertise in emerging risks, and data-driven decision making. For me, cyber embodies that future, and my role is to fuel its growth,” she said.

“I’ve always seen our cyber team as the ‘start-up within a large corporation.’ It’s got the can-do spirit of a young business, and with technology and data at its core, it strikes a perfect balance between creativity and technical excellence. What I love most, though, is working with people who share that entrepreneurial mindset — where innovation and drive are just part of the job.” &
