Effective Sept. 1, 2023, Richard G. Mills, Jr. will be United Educators new president and CEO.

“Rick is the perfect fit for UE,” said UE board of subscribers chair Morgan R. Olsen. “His combination of educational leadership experience, financial acumen and risk management knowledge will help ensure our continued success as the preeminent provider of insurance and risk management services to education.”

Mills previously served as executive dean for administration at Harvard University’s medical school. He was also a member of the board of Harvard University Library and Harvard University Clinical Research Institute.

Mills’ appointment follows the retirement of Janice M. Abraham, who served as UE’s president and CEO since 1998.

Two New Hires Brought On at Goldberg Segalla

Civil litigation law firm, Goldberg Segalla, has added two new partners to its civil litigation and trial group, with one hire centralized in Orlando and the other in Garden City.

Farideh E. Tadros joins the Orlando group after previously working with Pearson Doyle Mohre and Pastis.

With a background in insurance defense and medical malpractice, Tadros counsels and defends clients in a broad range of civil litigation matters, from intake through resolution.

Emily S. Schierhorst joins the Garden City group after previously working with Milber, Makris, Plousadis and Seiden.

Schierhorst will focus on civil litigation defense, including premises liability, transportation, construction accidents and New York Labor law. Her insurance defense background includes practice in civil RICO investigations, insurance fraud and no-fault claims.

Hafetz & Associates CEO to Join NFP Through Merger

P&C broker NFP has acquired Hafetz & Associates, LLC, a general agent specializing in providing health benefits, products and services to businesses and individuals.

Through the acquisition, Scott Hafetz, the firm’s president and CEO, will join NFP and report to Kate Henry, co-president of NFP’s Northeast region.

“We’re thrilled to join NFP and begin contributing to the success of a people-first organization with an exceptional health benefits team,” Hafetz said.

“This is a great opportunity to integrate across an organization with countless areas of expertise, enhance the services and solutions we provide, and explore ways to bring additional value to clients.”

Markel Brings on W&I Underwriter

Steven Feng, underwriter, Warranty and Indemnity, Markel

Markel has named Steven Feng as an underwriter for its warranty and indemnity (W&I) team.

Feng will report to Bryan Dressler, head of W&I at Markel’s international insurance business, where he will be responsible for underwriting the tax risks inherent in W&I transactions.

Feng’s experience includes insurance lines, financial due diligence and investment rationale expertise. He most recently spent more than nine years at PwC.

“Markel’s W&I business line was established last year with the purpose of being able to systematically assess the primary pillars of W&I risk – insurance, financial, legal, and tax due diligence – to allow for a streamlined and steady experience for our brokers and insureds,” Dressler said. “Steven’s background in managing tax risks in line with the cadence of M&A fits this foundation perfectly.”

“As an accomplished tax due diligence manager, Steven has the tools and focus to ask the right questions to arrive at the right insurance solutions for our clients at Markel. This will play a crucial role in our plans to continue driving profitable growth for the W&I portfolio and to harness insights from our valuable partnerships with coverholders,” Dressler concluded.

Xceedance Names New Strategic Leadership Role in London

Amit Tiwari, president, EMEA & APAC, Xceedance

Xceedance, a global provider of technology and digital solutions, claims services, and data and analytical insights to the insurance industry, announced the promotion of Amit Tiwari to the new role of president, EMEA & APAC.

In this new role, Tiwari will focus on growing awareness of the Xceedance brand in the London, continental Europe, and Australia insurance markets and work to connect with industry professionals across those locations.

“Amit is a co-founder of Xceedance and one of the company’s original 13 team members, which gives him a unique perspective on the company and how we want to advance as an organization,” said Arun Balakrishnan, chairman and CEO at Xceedance.

“I can’t imagine a better person to fill this new strategic leadership role, and I can’t wait to see Amit expand and grow Xceedance across Europe and Australia.”

30-Year Anniversary Celebrated at Custard Insurance Adjusters

Custard Companies, parent to Custard Insurance Adjusters, celebrated its CEO Charlie Peek for his 30th year with the organization.

Peek began his career with the company in April 1993 as branch manager of the Dallas, Texas office. Over the next 30 years, Peek rose through the ranks holding various district, regional and national management positions.

“Under Charlie’s leadership, we have experienced tremendous growth as Custard Companies continues to strengthen its role as a national leader in the claims service industry,” said chairman, Rick Linville.

Peek assumed the role of CEO in 2015.

“Being part of such a great team of professionals has been the biggest highlight of my career. I have seen the company grow on all levels and it has been truly exciting to see and be a part of this team,” Peek said.

Newfront Adds Lead to Maritime Practice

Jessica Graves, maritime team lead, Newfront

Jessica Graves has been promoted at brokerage Newfront to lead its maritime team in San Francisco.

Graves joined Newfront in 2020 and has more than 15 years of dedicated experience in the industry. Her background involves working with a wide range of clients including commercial fishing vessels, seafood processors, tug and barge operators, boat builders, shipyards, passenger vessels, and marine contractors.

In her new role, Graves is responsible for driving new business, recruiting new team members, and building the Newfront brand in the maritime industry.

“I couldn’t be more excited to step into this role with colleagues that I respect and admire, many of whom I worked with when I began my career,” Graves said.

“I look forward to finding innovative ways to strengthen our client and carrier relationships, as well as developing employee talent development strategies to ensure the ongoing vitality of the team.”

Graves has served on the board of Marine Insurance Association of Seattle and currently serves on the Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial board. &
