Dan Reynolds, the editor-in-chief of Risk & Insurance, recently caught up with Lynn O’Leary, the newly appointed President, U.S. Global Specialty Lines, for Intact Financial Corporation.

With more than 25 years of international insurance experience, Lynn now leads Intact’s U.S. specialty business—covering 20+ lines of business and multinational capabilities.

Previously CEO of RSA Luxembourg, Lynn expanded the European specialty business by launching new verticals, strengthening broker engagement, and building operational resilience. She previously held positions of responsibility with OneBeacon and Travelers. Here are some of the thoughts she shared with Risk & Insurance.

Risk & Insurance: Congratulations on your appointment, Lynn.  As you view the business landscape in front of you, what do you see as some of Intact’s more attractive business opportunities?

Lynn O’Leary: Thank you. I’m thrilled to be back in the U.S. and leading such a dynamic team. The specialty insurance market continues to evolve rapidly, and with that comes tremendous opportunity.

At Intact Insurance Specialty Solutions, we see strong potential in expanding and growing our presence in niche verticals where deep expertise and tailored solutions are critical and where we feel we can outperform. We’re seeing strong momentum in verticals like surety, ocean marine, and technology. We’re also focused on leveraging our multinational capabilities to support clients with global risks.

I’m focused on leveraging and building upon the talent in our underwriting and claims functions to deepen relationships in the market and continue to deliver tailored solutions that help our customers navigate an increasingly complex risk environment.

R&I: As a leader of this specialty business, what must you and your team execute on without fail in order to be successful?

LO: In specialty insurance, execution is everything. We must deliver underwriting excellence, maintain a sharp focus on risk selection, and ensure we’re responsive and collaborative with our distribution partners. Our success depends on staying close to the market, understanding emerging risks, and delivering tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of our brokers and customers.

We’ve our ambitions set on achieving $10 billion in annual DPW by 2030. To get there, we’re laser-focused on growing in high-performing verticals, keeping our eye on emerging segments and deepening and expanding our relationships with agents and brokers.  All underpinned with our commitment to disciplined underwriting and our financial stability and strength.

R&I: How has your legal background served you as an insurance professional?

LO: My legal background has been a huge asset throughout my career. It’s given me a strong foundation in critical thinking, negotiation, and risk assessment, all skills that are directly transferable to underwriting and operations. It also helps me navigate regulatory complexity and support sound governance, which is increasingly important in today’s global insurance environment. Having started in litigation, I also bring a deep appreciation for the claims process and the importance of delivering on our promises to customers.

R&I: What aspects of the international insurance business do you find intellectually stimulating?

LO: Having previously served as CEO of Europe RSA Luxembourg for Intact, I’ve had the privilege of working across a wide range of markets, each with its own regulatory frameworks, customer expectations, and competitive dynamics.

What I find most intellectually stimulating is the challenge of bringing together global strategy with consistent and effective local execution. As well as the opportunity to lead diverse teams.

The global insurance industry constantly pushes you to think broadly, adapt quickly, and innovate thoughtfully. That complexity is what makes it so rewarding.

R&I: What have been some of your most valuable lessons learned in your previous positions?

LO: Leading RSA Europe through transformation taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability and the positive impact of maintaining clarity in leadership- setting a clear vision, aligning teams around shared goals, and communicating and listening consistently.

Whether navigating market shifts, integrating teams, or responding to global events, staying grounded in our company values and focused on execution has always served me well. I’ve also learned that empowering people to bring their authentic selves to work is one of the most powerful ways to drive performance and innovation.

R&I: What would you like the distribution network to know in terms of how you plan to drive success for your company and your brokering partners?

LO: Our broker partners are essential to our success, and we’re committed to being a trusted, responsive, and solutions-oriented partner. That means being transparent about our appetite, investing in tools that make it easier to do business with us, and collaborating to uncover new opportunities.

We’re also focused on delivering value through specialization. Our vertical strategy is designed to bring deep expertise to the table, so brokers can feel confident that we understand their clients’ industries and risks. We’re here to grow together and partner for success and that starts with mutual trust, shared goals, and a relentless focus on delivering for our customers.

R&I: Anything else about your approach or the company that we didn’t ask you about that you would like to get across to our readers?

LO: I’d just add that at Intact, we’re deeply committed to our purpose: helping people, businesses, and society prosper in good times and be resilient in bad times. That purpose guides everything we do- from how we underwrite to how we support our communities.

We’re building something special in Global Specialty Lines at Intact. A platform that combines global reach, local expertise, and a culture of excellence and out performance. I’m excited about what’s ahead and confident that, together with our partners, we’ll continue to raise the bar in specialty insurance. &
