Theo Awards 2026: In Conversation with Foundation Building Materials
What if a long-tail claim wrapped up in weeks instead of years? For Anna Kakuta, Workers’ Comp Senior Manager at Foundation Building Materials, that is the standard, even as the company has grown from 359 to 439 locations through acquisition. Her core message: scale and white glove service are not opposites, and a company can grow quickly without losing the human side of claims.
The Foundation Way holds that if the company takes care of its employees, they will take care of customers. For an injured employee, that means treating them like family, walking them through an unfamiliar process, and making sure they know what to expect from both FBM and CorVel, starting with the nurse hotline CorVel implemented. Kakuta has seen what happens without communication: injured employees feel lost, and that is what sends them to an attorney. Safety efforts are targeted, such as delivery hazard assessments and pre-trip truck checks, and vehicle cameras are positioned as a tool to safeguard assets, including team members, rather than as surveillance.
Watch the full interview to discover why Kakuta believes AI can cost claims their humanity, how newly acquired teams are onboarded to the claims process, and the one thing about the Foundation Way she refuses to give up as the company keeps growing. &
