Meet Stanley Choi, vice president, Marsh McLennan, and a 2024 At Large Power Broker finalist.

Risk & Insurance: In which commercial lines are your clients struggling to put together adequate coverage?

Stanley Choi: In my role within the casualty claims, I have seen the impact of social inflation on general liability premiums. Clients are increasingly assuming higher retentions and self-insured risks, which is a symptom of the challenges in securing adequate coverage.

R&I: On the claims side, what’s working well and what’s not?

SC: The importance of data and risk management has never been greater.

We now have enhanced capabilities to distill critical data points that help identify exposures and mitigate losses. For instance, vehicles equipped with incident recording technology can capture video evidence and assess impact metrics.

Additionally, the Internet of Things (IoT) has made data more accessible than ever, empowering insurance professionals to leverage this information to reduce risks and exposures.

Furthermore, those utilizing generative AI can analyze data from diverse perspectives, leading to innovative insights.

R&I: Where do you see generative artificial intelligence making a difference in your team’s work?

SC: Generative AI has significantly enhanced our ability to obtain targeted information more efficiently. It facilitates targeted searches, brainstorming sessions and summarization of information, which increases our productivity and effectiveness.

I can foresee generative AI will automate routine, repetitive and cumbersome tasks on an enterprise scale, leading to improved efficiency, reduced errors and omissions, and allowing our advocates to concentrate on delivering exceptional service and support to our clients.

R&I: What advice would you give to a younger person that is seeking to break into this industry?

SC: Insurance is a promise of indemnity, which builds a relationship between many different parties: insured, insurers, claimants, TPAs, legal counsel, brokers and vendors. Relationships matter in this industry and building those relationships through service, care and expertise is essential to your career and development. &
