How a leading insurance company is working to improve property resilience through risk mitigation, technology adoption, and advocacy for building codes is the focus of “Code for Success: Building a Disaster-Resistant Future,” a new episode of the Predict & Prevent podcast.

Host Pete Miller, CEO of The Institutes, welcomes Mark Berven, president and COO of Nationwide Insurance, to talk about the importance of shifting from a reactive approach to a proactive “predict and prevent” mindset in the insurance industry, especially amid changing weather patterns.

“The focus that we are trying to bring in during these unprecedented times is not just supporting our customers after a claim, which is core to our mission, but really helping them take more proactive steps to find ways to avoid losses from happening to begin with,” Berven said.

Berven also talks about Nationwide’s efforts to raise awareness of the benefits of improved building codes, which are an important element in building homes and communities to be more resilient.

“There’s receptivity to it as more research is coming out showing the positive impact that building codes can have. I think there’s growing momentum behind that,” Berven said. “And yet today we know we’ve got a long way to go. FEMA had done some recent studies showing 65% of counties, cities, towns across the U.S. today still do not have adopted building codes.”

Berven shares several technologies that are having an impact on preventing losses, from handheld thermal imaging tools, to smart sensors that detect electrical hazards in a home, to wearable sensors that detect injury risks.

Adopting a long-term perspective on risk management that goes beyond immediate market dynamics is a key part of Nationwide’s approach. This vision involves sustained efforts to educate stakeholders, implement preventive measures, and gradually shift industry focus towards prediction and prevention

“One of the things that we talk about at Nationwide quite frequently being a mutual company is we are in this for the long haul. We think about not just the dynamics of the market today, but a longer-term view of how we evaluate risk and how we work together collectively to solve problems,” Berven said.
