Opinion | Brilliant Decency

So much of our newsfeeds focus on discord, dishonesty and indecency.

So and so “dissed” or “burned” so and so. He ran over her cat, so she shot his dog, and so on and on.

Less well-known is the steady, sometimes brilliant work of those who work in risk management and risk transfer. It’s not a job that’s going to generate many headlines on CNN, but it is vital work. Doing it requires passion, perseverance and creativity.

It also requires decency.

Our 2025 Risk All Stars embody this decency in heavy doses. They put in the long hours. They think about the impact of their words and deeds on other people.

One example is the rock-solid program put together by the City of Oklahoma City’s LaVeta Breath to address PTSD in firefighters and police officers. Another is the work done by Erickson Senior Living’s Joselle Bamford to strengthen return to work programs and overall access to health care for that company’s employee base.

Imagine how hard it is to care for the aging and vulnerable, with all of their needs and frailties. Bamford’s work supports those who support others. Imagine if her name were as well known as the “celebrities” so many seem so obsessed with.

Perhaps it is best if our Risk All Stars are not so well known. Perhaps the work they do in relative anonymity would be torn down by the ravages of social media if it were otherwise. So let’s put down our smartphones for a second and thank them.

Thank them for their brilliance and their decency. &
