Global Risk Management Pioneers Inducted Into RIMS Hall of Fame

RIMS inducted risk management leaders Dr. Gert Cruywagen, Susan Meltzer, and Bradley Wood into its Risk Management Hall of Fame, recognizing their global contributions to advancing the profession during a ceremony at RISKWORLD in Chicago.
“As we celebrate RIMS 75th Anniversary and look toward the future it is incredibly important that we recognize the exceptional trailblazers who have given so much to help empower risk professionals around the world,” stated RIMS CEO Gary A. LaBranche, FASAE, CAE. “Dr. Cruywagen, Susan Meltzer, and Bradley Wood have had remarkable careers and are wonderful examples of the immense impact we can have on future generations.”
Cruywagen, who died in 2022, led risk management for the Tsogo Sun Group, Africa’s largest hospitality and entertainment company. His influence extended far beyond South Africa, serving as an Honorary Member of both the Russian and Polish Risk Management Associations while actively contributing to global risk governance through his work on the King Committee on Corporate Governance.
Meltzer’s career traversed some of Canada’s most prominent organizations, including Bell Canada, Sun Life Financial, and Aviva Canada, where she ultimately served as vice president of risk before her 2019 retirement. Her international influence was cemented during her tenure as president of the International Federation of Insurance & Risk Management Associations (IFRIMA) from 2004 to 2008.
Wood’s 34-year career began with a RIMS scholarship and culminated in his role as Marriott International’s senior vice president of Risk Management, where he oversaw risk operations across more than 30 brands in over 100 countries. His leadership of a 250-person global team demonstrates the evolution of risk management from a narrowly defined insurance function to a comprehensive discipline encompassing security, business continuity, crisis management, and strategic risk finance.
Building Risk Management’s Future
All three inductees demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing risk management education and mentorship. Cruywagen founded the Cruywagen-IRMSA Risk Foundation, a non-profit facilitating risk laboratories, training, internships, and exchange programs for risk management students. His academic contributions were formally recognized when he was named South Africa’s “Risk Manager of the Year” in 2009.
Meltzer’s educational impact includes teaching Canadian Risk Management Certificate courses at the University of Toronto and participating in the Spencer Educational Foundation’s Risk Manager in Residence program at universities across North America. Her influence on future risk professionals was commemorated when the RIMS Ontario Chapter renamed its Top CRM Graduate Award the “Susan Meltzer Award” in 2024.
Wood exemplified leadership development by providing his team of 250 risk professionals with extensive resources, tools, and training opportunities. His continued advocacy through the Business Continuity Coalition’s steering committee has focused on creating a market for pandemic insurance to protect the broader economy from future disruptions.
The Risk Management Hall of Fame, established in 2011, honors professionals who have made exceptional contributions to the discipline. Nominees are considered globally, with inductees selected by the RMHF Selection Committee based on their contributions, achievements, leadership, character, service, and ethical conduct.
