Risk & Insurance: In which commercial lines are your clients struggling to put together adequate coverage?

Falak Kothari: There are a few, starting with natural catastrophic risks. Coverage for flood, earthquake, wildfire and other such events is increasingly limited, particularly in high-risk regions.

Auto fleet with high U.S. exposure are subject to higher liability exposures due to more litigious legal and regulatory environment. Nuclear verdicts are driving up claim costs.

Construction projects, particularly larger, more complex projects are seeing higher premiums and can be challenging in terms of securing adequate limits for builders’ risk and wrap-up liability.

R&I: On the claims side, what’s working well and what’s not?

FK: What’s working well: Specialized adjusters, who have expertise in handling complex claims improves outcomes. Technology advancement, specifically digital tools, which are streamlining claims processing resulting in efficiency and faster processing time. Data driven insights and advanced analytics and predictive modeling are helping in analyzing patterns and optimizing claim outcomes.

We’re also collectively ensuring effective communication. Insurers providing regular updates and transparent claims handling processes are improving client satisfaction.

What’s not working as well would be the rising claim costs. Inflation and higher nuclear verdicts, especially in the U.S., are driving up claim severity. Ambiguities in policy wording are leading to coverage disputes. Lengthy settlement times stemming from complex claims are taking much longer to resolve due to capacity constraints and in-depth investigations. Then there are workforce challenges, with shortages in specialized claims resources often leading to delays. Finally, catastrophic events: Recent events and high volume of claims are overwhelming the system causing delays.

R&I: Where do you see generative artificial intelligence making a difference in your team’s work?

FK: There are several use cases for Gen AI that can make a significant difference to my team’s work and the firm/industry. Some of them include:

– AI powered tools can assist in providing tailored responses to client queries, improving engagement and responsiveness.
– It can be useful in content creation to help create presentations and pitch decks.
– It can be used to review policy documents and create concise summaries to simplify and explain terms and coverages to clients.
– It can be used for meeting preparation – research, brief, agenda, industry knowledge etc.
– It can help automate and bring efficiencies in administrative functions such as certificates of insurance, policy documents, endorsements, and other notifications.
– It can be used for insurance 101 to help clients understand key risk exposures, insurance products, etc.

R&I: What advice would you give to a younger person that is seeking to break into this industry?

FK: Be curious and ask questions. Focus on the basics, develop a good understanding of insurance industry (market conditions, key coverage lines, emerging risks, etc.), and invest into your own learning and development. Certifications like RIBO, CIP, CRM will lay a good foundation and help build credibility.
