Community-Centric Leadership: George Williams’ Vision for Small Business Risk Management at Nationwide
With a background at Guy Carpenter and AIG, George Williams has been tapped to lead the small market commercial lines business for Nationwide. He joined the company in December of 2021 and most recently was the company’s COO for commercial lines, excess and surplus and specialty.
Having worked in many aspects of the P&C industry in a career that spans more than two decades, Williams said a key consideration in leading a small market business is the volume of business and the role technology plays in executing on it.
“In small commercial, a high percentage of the underwriting decisions are actioned by technology, tools and models, with humans handling the kick-outs and the fine-tuning. In middle market and large account business, the underwriter is the center of the process for each individual risk,” Williams said.
“As a result, there’s a bit more of an operations process and technology component to building out the overall model in small commercial than in middle market.”
Williams said what attracted him to Nationwide was the company’s focus on people and community.
“From the very beginning, Nationwide’s culture stood out to me,” said Williams. “The emphasis on people— whether associates, customers, or partners— is very impressive,” he added.
In addressing his client’s pain points, whether they be inflation, weather or cyber attacks, Williams said he knows that they need to focus on their business and that they need a reliable risk transfer and risk mitigation partner.
“I have friends that are small business owners, and they are successful because they were skilled in their particular area of expertise, such as HVAC or plumbing. They are not trained risk management professionals,” he said.
“Nationwide, together with our trusted distribution partners, needs to answer those questions for them, address their concerns, and provide confidence that they’re protected by a trusted carrier that stands behind them,” he added.
Williams will face his own challenges as a business leader, and here is how he plans to address them. “In any new role, it’s crucial to ensure a clear linkage between strategy, market identity, capabilities, actions and objectives,” he said. “It’s also vital that every associate is focused, empowered, and executing their tasks with clarity to help us achieve our goals.”
“Leading a small commercial platform requires a combination of underwriting, technology, operational excellence and customer focus,” said Russ Johnston, Nationwide’s president of Commercial Lines, Excess & Surplus, Specialty. “George has a proven background in these areas that will enable us to drive this important business forward for Nationwide.” &
