Placing risks via a captive company is a complex process that can be a hard solution for a risk manager to sell to leadership.

Unless, of course, they can boast the support of an exceptional broker like Prabal Lakhanpal.

“Some brokers come up with solutions that cannot be executed internally because they are too complicated and one can never get the CFO or the captive board to buy the idea,” said Michael Lubben, director of global risk management at Henry Crown & Company/CCI.

“Prabal looks at our problems from a risk manager’s perspective. He helps us put the solution together and think about it in simpler ways that are easier to sell to the CFO.”

Lakhanpal put those skills to work in 2025 when Lubben took charge of the company’s benefits department and decided to place the medical insurance stop loss program with the help of its captive. In a hardening market, Lakhanpal deployed analytics to help define the right level of retention to optimize the program.

“We took a much higher retention in the captive, which we were happy to do because now it is aligned to our P&C program too,” Lubben said.

Lakhanpal also helped Jennifer Pack, vice president of risk management at Hyatt Hotels, to centralize the company’s leave of absence system and use the captive to manage exposures more efficiently, as part of measures that will allow Hyatt to save an estimated $12M over a five-year period.
