The University of Kentucky was new to the world of captive insurance.
But thanks to Ben Coffman, the school felt it was making educated choices about the direction it was going, according to Todd Adkins, the university’s executive director for risk management and campus accessibility.
“To me and for our administration, it showed that, ‘Hey, this is your decision. We’re not telling you what to do. We’re providing you with options,’ ” Adkins said.
Coffman also provided plenty of answers to the questions raised by constituencies across campus, including legal and finance departments, Adkins said.
And when it was time for the university to go to market, Coffman was an effective advocate. “This was a critical achievement, because we have a few coverages in there, and we’re looking to utilize it even more each year.”
For a consortium of public universities in one state, Coffman helped streamline the contract review process inside Marsh, speeding it up, according to the consortium’s director of risk management and environmental health and safety. The service had been hampered by staff turnover and growing contract volume submitted by the consortium members.
Coffman helped devise a new process that includes a standard track and a process for expediting reviews, the director said. “As you can imagine, a lot of folks within our universities come to us at the last minute.”
