Losing the potential to win projects with clients was a very real threat for Hall Contracting until Will Kantlehner helped it retain the experience modification rating (EMR) needed for private projects.

The company’s rating, which third parties use to indicate future risk, had slipped due to some claims. At Kantlehner’s suggestion, the company switched to the AGC Fund of Kentucky, which provided an EMR of less than 1.0 in the state. “We continue to work for our private clients today in Kentucky, which definitely wouldn’t have been the case if our broker hadn’t suggested the change,” said Steve Priebe, president of Hall Contracting.

It’s not easy to spur a cultural shift within a large company, but that’s what Kantlehner helped another of his customers do. He volunteered to do a deep dive into the safety procedures of Louisville Paving. The survey results prompted the company to shift emphasis on safety from its five-person safety department to superintendents in the field.

“We’ve now put all superintendents in the field into safety training,” said Reggie Ball, vice president with Louisville Pavement. “Our field management has to be the leading edge of safety.” Volunteering to perform the survey himself saved Louisville a lot of money, but Kantlehner also gets advice from other experts as needed.

“A lot of people want to keep their arms around everything, and there are a lot of agents that won’t bring in someone else that is more knowledgeable than them,” Ball said. “I think, for me, Will is quick to find a solution and say, ‘Hey, this guy is the best in the business.’”
