COVID-19 sidelined Rebuilding Together’s volunteers, who help low-income homeowners with no-cost repairs. Rebuilding Together had to hire contractors to do the work instead, changing its risk profile.

Joan Dove helped with risk transfer and waivers for homeowners, contractors and the remaining volunteers.

She held webinars and attended meetings with the board of directors and affiliate contractors, said Susan Hawfield, senior vice president, and offered advice on contracts. “Joan has the heart for this work,” she said.

After the disastrous fires and mudslides on the West Coast, every branch of the Channel Islands YMCA needed cleanup and repair. Mike Evans, facilities and risk manager, passed the hastily drawn service agreements and contracts by Dove.

“Joan redlined and edited whatever I sent,” he said. Childcare centers, mostly in schools, closed. “I called her at 7 p.m.,” he said. “Within a few hours, we had two approved sites in churches with all the necessary insurance requirements.”

She referred a remediation team and a forensic accountant to ensure fair pricing. He expected to leave a message and she’d call back in the morning. Within hours, she found two churches to house the childcare service. She referred a remediation team, then watched for fair pricing.

“She’s a superhero day to day, week to week,” Evans said.
