Gallagher Broker Amy Kansay Recognized as a 2026 Education & Nonprofit Power Broker
Amy Kansay, Area Vice President, Gallagher
The Urban Assembly needed a policy in place before beginning work under a contract with a city in California. And it wasn’t just any policy; it was a policy covering liability for sexual abuse and molestation, coverage that has been increasingly difficult to place, according to Steven Smith, director of finance and administration.
The nonprofit’s incumbent broker was unable to secure coverage, said Smith.
So, he tapped into his network and found Amy Kansay, who instilled so much confidence from the start that The Urban Assembly had staff ready to go in California even before she found a policy, Smith said.
“She hung in there and kept marketing until someone said yes,” said Smith. He then called on Kansay to fill the nonprofit’s other insurance needs. It’s been a very short relationship, but it’s been a very fruitful relationship.”
Kansay’s persistence is also making a difference for the Bowery Residents’ Committee, which provides services to homeless people in New York City. The nonprofit faces growing challenges in placing property and general liability insurance, said CFO Lilia Calves: “More and more, what we’re seeing is that insurance carriers really don’t want to cover us.”
Kansay has worked with carriers to structure the nonprofit’s policies to ensure it has the coverage it needs, and she has worked with its staff on improving safety practices.
“She’s also extremely responsive,” Calves said. “If I need her, all I have to do is either shoot her an email or call her, and she’s there.”
