Museum curators know how important lending is in the art world. One institution might lend a piece of artwork to another, or a private collector might loan some of their collection to a museum for a temporary display.

Whatever the circumstances, the insurance challenges center around what coverage the art might need for transport. Who will purchase the insurance — the lending institution or the borrower? That part can get a little sticky.

Enter Isabelle de St. Antoine, assistant vice president with Aon/Huntington T. Block. This year, de St. Antoine helped a number of her clients navigate issues with insurance coverage for artworks on loan or those being borrowed.

“She really helps me feel safe on the insurance side of things,” said Daniel A. Silva, registrar for El Museo del Barrio. “She’s always there, even if it’s a question outside of typical inquiries about insurance limits or exhibitions.”

One client needed help navigating international loan agreements, one of which had over 20 different lenders. In one case, de St. Antoine helped a client navigate securing appropriate coverage for an item on loan after they noticed a gap in one of the agreements.

De St. Antoine has also ensured that clients with growing collections have the appropriate coverage. “She’s been really helpful in answering all these behind-the-scenes questions regarding what the insurance company feels comfortable with when it comes to the redesign of our facilities and our coverage,” a client said. “She’s been a real asset.”
