In a volatile market, Connie Liu knows how to get her workers’ comp clients the best possible deal. She led a full marketing effort for one client’s workers’ compensation program this year as it sought a carrier that would use employee count — rather than the standard payroll figures — to calculate premium.

The client needed this uniquely structured program due to the fact that its employees’ payroll is tied to its sales and revenue growth. Liu used historical data to explain her client’s unique structure to the carrier. Then, as she does with all her clients, she highlighted the company’s favorable workers’ comp loss trends and safety investments to show carriers why they should feel comfortable taking on this risk.

“Throughout the years, she’s helped … carriers understand … the business itself [and] understand the risk and what differentiates us from what may be perceived as our peers,” the client said. “She really engages us with the carriers. Sometimes you just face a broker but don’t [have] the opportunities to be face-to-face with the carriers.”

It’s clear that carriers respect Liu and listen when she advocates for her clients. She not only has a strong sense of workers’ comp market trends, but she also listens and is eager to learn more.

“Her knowledge of the markets, and importantly her respect from the markets, enables her to get things done more efficiently, and with a consistently high level of excellence,” said Todd Marumoto, VP of risk management and safety for Guess Inc.
