Ryan Givens, chief pricing actuary at Westfield Specialty, and a 2026 Risk & Insurance Executive to Watch, represents a new generation of actuarial leadership that understands the evolving specialty landscape.

With more than 20 years of experience as a commercial lines actuary, Givens has spent his first nine months at Westfield Specialty building a lean, high-performing team that delivers the kind of data-driven insights that modern underwriting demands.

“My primary responsibility is to ensure that we are fully and transparently contextualizing any data or analysis that we provide to underwriters,” Givens said. “I promote a proactive mindset on providing insights to the business, which often draw comparisons to prior conclusions or to a wider market view.”

A Collaborative Approach

For Givens, the traditional model of actuarial support — where pricing teams simply respond to underwriting requests — no longer suffices in today’s dynamic market. Instead, he advocates for a more collaborative, proactive approach that positions actuaries as strategic partners in the underwriting process.

“We have a duty to be selective about which observations we emphasize, and which ones need additional time to substantiate,” Givens said. “The best way to build consensus is to facilitate an open dialogue and to be receptive to challenge, and Westfield Specialty has a fantastic culture that embraces this type of collaboration.”

This philosophy extends beyond just providing numbers. Givens approaches the presentation of actuarial insights with the mindset of a product designer, understanding that how information is delivered can be just as important as the information itself.

“I also have a relentless focus on the design and presentation style of information that we share,” he said. “I approach it like a product designer would, because I want our underwriters to be drawn in with materials that are engaging and intuitive.”

This attention to detail in communication reflects a broader understanding that actuarial teams must evolve their role from data providers to insight partners. By ensuring that analyses are not only technically sound but also commercially relevant and easily digestible, Givens and his team enable underwriters to make decisions that are both disciplined and informed by collective wisdom.

“Ultimately, we aim for their decisions to be disciplined and grounded in our collective wisdom,” Givens noted, emphasizing the importance of combining technical rigor with practical application. The technological transformation of the insurance industry has been particularly pronounced in actuarial science, where advances in machine learning and data infrastructure have fundamentally changed what’s possible. Givens has witnessed this evolution firsthand throughout his career and is now positioning Westfield Specialty to capitalize on these opportunities.

“There’s no question that technological advancements have made us more efficient and more effective,” Givens said. “Five to ten years ago, developing a new predictive model could take months of R&D, whereas machine learning has introduced methods that are much quicker to identify patterns in large datasets.”

Under Givens’ leadership, Westfield Specialty has recently launched a comprehensive actuarial data platform designed to harness these technological advancements. This platform integrates various data sources and analytical tools, providing the team with unprecedented access to insights that can inform underwriting strategy in real-time.

The development of this platform represents a significant investment in the company’s analytical capabilities. By establishing a framework of metrics that enable real-time insights into margin, profitability, and risk, Givens has positioned the company to respond swiftly to market shifts and optimize risk selection. &
