2024 Theo Award Winner: Superior Construction Co. Inc.

Superior Construction Co. Inc., based in Jacksonville, Florida, has implemented innovative strategies to keep employees engaged, valued and supported throughout the injury recovery process. The company recognized that maintaining employee connection and facilitating a smooth return to work were critical challenges impacting their program.

Tackling the Problem

To address these issues, Superior Construction introduced several key initiatives. The company implemented telemedicine services, allowing injured employees to receive immediate care from a doctor without delay.

This quick access to medical attention helps reduce the lag time between an incident occurring and the employee receiving treatment. But it’s about more than that, said Sherice Rivas, the organization’s corporate risk manager. It’s also part of the bond of trust that the company strives to build with its workforce.

“The claims process is where we get to deliver on our promise of treating employees like family, especially when they’re at their most vulnerable,” Rivas said. “Word spreads quickly about how an employee is treated during this time, whether it’s a negative experience that leads to litigation or a positive one that fosters trust.

Telemedicine plays a significant role in building trust by providing prompt, attentive care. Our bilingual doctors can communicate directly with our predominantly English and Spanish-speaking employees, eliminating the need for third-party interpreters. This demonstrates that we care about our employees’ well-being.

“It also allows us to address urgent needs, such as prescribing pain medication outside of regular business hours. By utilizing services like DoorDash for prescription delivery, we can support employees who may have difficulty accessing a pharmacy due to their injury.”

These efforts have helped the organization maintain trust with employees, even in cases where they have legal representation, according to Rivas.

“By delivering on our promises and minimizing anxiety during vulnerable times, we’ve been able to prevent further escalation of claims. Telemedicine has been a key component in providing prompt, compassionate care when our employees need it most,” she said.

Superior Construction also developed a robust return-to-work program to accommodate employees with restrictions. The program offers a range of options, from light duty onsite work to virtual assignments. During their recovery, employees can participate in safety trainings provided by third-party vendors, helping them stay engaged with work and continue their professional development.

“Superior Construction sets the bar when it comes to a return to work program,” said Ray Talavera, client services manager, Liberty Mutual. “Sherice Rivas learned from COVID limitations and created one of the best temporary transitional employment programs that I’ve seen in the construction industry. It provides injured construction workers a convenient virtual way to practically gain the benefits of temporary transitional duty for employees typically engaged in active physical work.”

The claims and risk management department maintains open communication with supervisors to ensure positions are available for injured workers upon their return. This emphasis on a smooth transition back to work helps employees feel welcomed and valued after a challenging period.

“It’s crucial to ensure that injured employees still feel valued and that their work is meaningful, even if they have light duty restrictions,” Rivas said. “In the construction industry, our laborers want to be out there contributing to the team.

By partnering with a telemedicine provider, Superior Construction has given employees 24/7 access to trusted medical professionals for questions, prescription refills, and other needs. This ongoing support has proven valuable in decreasing the severity of injuries and reducing potential complications.

Superior Construction’s approach extends beyond just managing injuries. The company has cultivated a culture of family that celebrates when an employee is able to return to work. This positive reinforcement contributes to a supportive work environment and helps boost morale.

Success to Build On

Superior Construction’s comprehensive approach has yielded positive outcomes for both employees and the company. The reduction in lag time between incidents and care has helped mitigate the impact of injuries. The trusted relationship established with the telemedicine provider has decreased employee mistrust, which can often lead to adverse outcomes such as litigated claims and high indemnity and medical costs.

The company’s focus on maintaining engagement throughout the recovery process and facilitating a positive return to work has strengthened its culture of care. By prioritizing employee well-being and providing robust support systems, Superior Construction has created a work environment where employees feel valued and supported, even in challenging circumstances.

The company also remains mindful of the unique risks its employees face, and the troubling nationwide statistics surrounding suicide risk in the industry.

“This year, our company actively participated in the construction suicide prevention walk to raise awareness about the high rates of suicide in the construction industry,” said Rivas. “We engaged employees across several locations, including Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa, to join the larger walking groups.

“For those who couldn’t attend in person, we provided the option to participate virtually by submitting their steps,” she added. “That way, we could ensure that anyone who wanted to engage in the initiative could do so.” &
