College students pursuing careers in insurance and risk management are seeking internships that provide hands-on industry experience and mentorship, according to a recent survey from Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS).

In the recent survey of more than 400 students and recent graduates of colleges across North America, GIS sought to find what they are looking for in a professional internship. Key findings from the survey include:

  • Approximately 80% of respondents preferred full-time internships.
  • Over 75% of respondents cited employment and future growth as a primary internship influencer.
  • Nearly 70% cited meaningful work assignments as a primary internship influencer.
  • Over 80% of respondents said mentorship is very important.
  • Nearly 70% of students are applying for internships as freshmen and sophomores.

“These findings underscore the importance of internships and mentorship programs in attracting and retaining talent in the insurance industry,” according to GIS, a nonprofit student organization that describes itself as the industry’s premier collegiate talent pipeline.

As the insurance sector grapples with talent challenges, internship and mentorship programs will be crucial in exposing students to the diverse opportunities within insurance, risk management, and actuarial sciences, GIS stated.

The survey also highlighted the value students place on their involvement with GIS, not just for industry exposure, but for the connections made with peers, faculty, and insurance professionals.

“The next generation of talent is ready to dive into the industry, explore its many roles and make meaningful connections to launch prosperous careers,” said Grace Grant, executive director at GIS. “The data in GIS’s 9th Annual Recruiting Survey demonstrates that the insurance industry must find creative ways to better reach, engage with and retain students and young professionals through real-world experience.”
